How do I choose the best cycling helmet and is it possible to avoid helmet hair?

Cycling helmets are available to suit all ages, abilities and budgets. If you are a recreational cyclist aiming to ride once every few weeks, you could pick up a decent helmet for $40 to $50. For those clocking up weekly kilometres, it pays to spend a little more for a better-quality, lighter, better-looking helmet.

A bike shop or a larger sports retailer is the best place to start. Be wary of buying from department stores, because they don't always have specialist knowledge to help you.

There are three helmet essentials. Safety: the Australian Standards sticker on the inside of the helmet is a must, as helmets can save lives. Size: your helmet must fit firmly but comfortably and sit 10-15 millimetres above your eyebrows. Many helmets come with an adjustable rear headlock to customise the fit. When fastened, the helmet should not move around if you shake your head. Style: choose a light or bright colour for visibility. Ventilation will keep you cool on hot days and is a great sporty look.

Remember to replace an old or damaged helmet if you notice cracking in the foam or outer shell.

To avoid helmet hair, braid long hair in one or two plaits. Before donning your helmet, spray hair lightly with hairspray, then comb it out when you remove your helmet. Or ask your bike shop about products that cover your hair, like a bandanna, to keep it smooth.
